Alternate CD Art:
NOTES: This was the original cover idea for the "You Knew It All Along" 2003 tour pre-release. Basically, somehow all the elements fell into place for a tour but the CD was pretty far from being completed. Nevertheless I decided to press a small run of the unfinished disc (100 copies) and needed some artwork ASAP. An over simplified idea to be sure BUT it seemed to fit well with the title (though not having anything to do with the titles origins). I wasn't really happy with it at the time but that didn't matter because the manufacturer had decided that they simply wouldn't print it as they feared a copyright suite from Disney and/or McDonalds. So... that was it for this cover. For now anyway...

NOTES: With a need for a cover for the tour release I needed to make some quick changes. Originally I dropped Mickey and Ronald and replaced them with Hitler and Mussolini. The funny thing was, no one recognized Mussolini. So, Mussolini apparently wasn't a big enough of an ass in history for people to remember so I had to replace him. Now ya' got Stalin. The manufacturer I was using had no problem with this image and so the 2003 tour version of "You Knew It All Along" was released with this image. For the record... I still wasn't happy with this cover but time was up and I need to go with something.

NOTES: SO... not being happy with the cover of the CD that was printed (see notes for previous image) I was already thinking of new ideas for the final release of the disc. I shot the above image somewhere in Illnois while on tour in 2003. In my mind's eye, this was the shot I had envisioned for the CD. I wanted a contrast to the music on the disc. I wanted color. I wanted something bright. I wanted a blue sky.  However, in practice it looked like shit and didn't fit with whatever "things outside the skin" is. So... after having seen it vs. imagining it, the idea was canned and I was once again lost for ideas.

NOTES: Another image shot somewhere on tour. Not as bright as the previous idea but it had the sky I was looking for with a wicked set of branches holding it up. In the end... the spirit of the title wasn't there so again.. the idea was scrapped.

NOTES: After the tour I got back to work on the CD and I started to think about having someone else do the CD art. I'd never done anything like that in the past and I thought a fresh perspective might help. I'd come across Lisa Alisa's art through a friend and the above image blew me away. We had talked and she said she'd be happy to let me use the image for the disc. I played around with the layout, made the above image and got back to work on the CD. If the music had been done at the time I probably would have used this image for the cover. However... the music wasn't done and I'd had too much time to think about things and again... somehow the spirit I was looking for for the disc wasn't there. Once again, the idea was cast aside.

NOTES: Still on the search for something inspiring I approached the new t.o.t.s. drummer, Tim Durland, to see if he'd be interested in coming up with something. I gave him a slew of t.o.t.s. photos from various videos we'd shot over the years and he came back with this ultra-cool tabloid version of "You Knew It All Along". This was it! Until it snowed...

NOTES: The final image. The snow... I had been playing with the idea of using meat lockers in conjunction with a new doll I was working on. The idea was to have a number of these dolls hanging from meat hooks in a large freezer. "Youth in cold-storage" or something along those lines. Problems began when I couldn't find a large walk in freezer to use. Sure there's plenty around but as soon as I described the idea I was promptly denied. So, the idea and the new doll just sat idle for awhile. Then sometime late 2004 or early 2005 we a had a bit of a blizzard. The sheets of snow that blanketed the ground were perfect! Completely unspoiled by footsteps, dog piss or garbage... for now anyway. Inspired by the sheer white and ice, I found a suitable snowbank on the roof of my apt. building and sat in the cold for around six hours for the few shots used on the CD itself. In the end... few people even know it's snow. In the end... what's the image even have to do with the title anymore? In the end... the imagery came back to a similar aesthetic I was trying to avoid from the very beginning. Don't get me wrong, I love the images. I just don't know where they've come from anymore.

NOTES: This was the original tray insert for "You Knew It All Along". It's only significance is with the number of companies that refused to print this image. It had been 2 years since I had first tried to print a similar image and I thought I'd try again. It wasn't the cover so I thought I have more "wiggle room". Not the case! Now, not only was the Mickey and Ronald a no go... BUT now no one would print the image of our dearest fuck-head President Bush in this context. When I say no one, I mean over six different manufacturers in the US and Canada. Time was up... the CD was complete and I needed this all to be done. The "Super Friends" Bush, Hitler, Stalin, Mickey and Ronald have finally been laid to rest. It's too bad that three of these asses still live on...
